GREEN ROOM CHATTER with JANE ELLEN BRYANT
2016-2017 Winner of Best Female Vocals + Best New Austin Band
Jane Ellen Bryant has had a really impressive year, beginning with winning the 2016-2017 Best Female Vocals + Best New Austin Band at the Austin Music Awards. Additionally, Jane recorded on Jimmy LaFave’s last album, was nominated as a 2017 Black Fret grant recipient, and she was named “Artist of the Month” by both Austin Monthly and Austin Music Foundation. We’re looking forward to seeing what she has in store for 2018!
What’s the best part of winning an AMA?
This career path is full of highs and lows. The AMA’s happened at a perfect time for me. I was feeling unusually discouraged and this was the best reminder to keep going. It felt like all of the hard work was finally being recognized at a higher level. Truly a dream come true. I’m so thankful for the recognition it has brought me.
Funny backstage moment?
I was so star struck while riding down an elevator backstage with Joe Ely that I forgot to press the button. He kindly reminded me.
What do you wish for the Austin music scene?
I think the Austin music scene is so beautiful and perfectly rare. I’m thrilled with how all the musicians support one another. I’m incredibly thankful for the people who constantly go out and support live music. I’m also fascinated by programs such as Black Fret, HAAM, Austin Music Foundation and SIMS who keep us all on our feet. I know change is inevitable, but I just hope we can always keep what makes us so unique going strong.
What projects are you currently working on?
I just recorded 5 new singles that will be released next year. I can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on behind the scenes.
At the moment, what’s your favorite song by another local artist?
“Red Rescue” by Jaimee Harris
On the record but off topic – what’s your favorite taco in Austin?
The “Cherrywood” breakfast taco at El Chilito. Hits the spot every time.
