2016-2017 Winner of Best Blues/Soul/Funk Band

Once you see Shinyribs perform their lively swamp pop, it becomes very clear why they took home the 2016-2017 Best Blues/Soul/Funk Band at the Austin Music Awards. Frontman Kevin Russell is quite the comic and showman as you can see on stage, in his songs and from this interview.  Enjoy!

What’s the best part of winning an AMA?

Mounting it on the hood of my minivan and cruising the service roads of 35 to taunt, rankle and needle the effete & overripe.

Funny backstage moment?

Trying to explain to Lukas Nelson that the lyrics of Purple Rain will indeed fit almost perfectly within the music of the old Johnny Bush classic, Whiskey River.

Who do you want to see perform at the AMAs?

Ed “MuthaFuggin’ Hall! Bad Livers! Lil Cap’n Travis, Ramsay Midwood and of course Jamiee Harris.

What do you wish for the Austin music scene?

A swift kick in the summer breeze.

What project/s are you currently working on?

I am thinking of starting a company that makes personalized tags for people. They could be applied thru touchless, odorless, painless injection. You could inject them anonymously under the skin of anyone you choose. And then you could track them on your device to make sure you never had to encounter them again. Still in the testing phases. Having some minor privacy issues. But once we get that worked out we should be golden. We’d like to invite all you venture capitalists out to our shows. We love money.

Who are your local musical influences?

Chronologically: Jerry Jeff, Willie, Waylon, The Tail Gators, True Believers, Zeitgeist/Reivers (The irony of them having to change their name from Zeitgeist was not lost on me), Ed Hall, The Wannabes, Alejandro Escovedo, Bad Livers, James McMurtry, Mike Stewart, Jon Dee Graham, Jethro of The Rockbusters, Davis McLarty, Doug Sahm, Hamell On Trial, Earthpig….

At the moment, what’s your favorite song by another local artist?

“Texas Girl” by Carolyn Wonderland is a great little song. A fresh take on the official footwear of Texas.

On the record but off topic – what’s your favorite taco in Austin?

I cannot in good conscience divulge such precious knowledge in a public forum. But Macho’s Tacos in Manchaca is where you’ll usually find me at taco time.
