GREEN ROOM CHATTER with WARREN HOOD
2016-2017 Winner of Best String Player (tied with Tosca String Quartet)
Warren Hood is no stranger to the Austin Music Awards or winning Best String Player, tying in 2016-2017 with Tosca String Quartet. Check out what this talented native fiddler has to say about the Austin music – and taco – scene.
What’s the best part of winning an AMA?
My favorite part about winning an AMA is attending the award show. I have grown up in the Austin music scene. When I was a boy, my father, Champ Hood, won “Best Strings” several years in a row. He would take me to the show as his guest. Some 20 years later I have won that same award 7 times. All of these years later I still see a lot of the same people backstage (other musicians and industry folks) that I first got to know as a kid hanging off my dad’s arm. Backstage at the AMAs is like an Austin music family reunion.
Funny backstage moment?
My favorite backstage moment was taking my 2 month old son last year. It was a little scary driving across town, parking, and walking to the award show in the midst of the SXSW chaos with a tiny 2 month old baby. Once we got there we shot several pics of him next to some of my favorite artists such as Bob Schneider and The Flatlanders as if he were some tiny travel gnome.
Who do you want to see perform at the AMAs?
I would like to see Ian Moore perform at the AMAs. I just did a stint of rehearsals with him for an upcoming show and I had forgotten how good he really is. We are doing a stripped down theater show soon but I would like to see him rock out at the AMAs with his full band. He’s a triple threat with powerful vocals, thoughtful lyrics, and a master of tasty tone-first guitar playing.
What project/s are you currently working on?
Currently, I am collaborating with a lot of other artist and putting my own projects on the back burner. In short span of time I will be working with Ian Moore, Alejandro Escovedo, Eliza Gilkyson, and others. I have a 2 week old baby boy as I write this so my focus is on my family and staying home. I might record a new record in 2018 but in will probably be 2019. My band plays every Wednesday at ABGB and that is enough to keep us going until we record and get busy again. Everybody in my band also plays with other bands so it is no big deal to only do Wednesdays for a while.
On the record but off topic – what’s your favorite taco in Austin?
My favorite taco right now is the Vercruz taco truck at Radio Coffee. The migas pablanos taco is soooo good. For lunch or dinner I get their chicken taco. The fish taco is also a winner but it does usually take a long time to get that one out of the kitchen.
